"The Red Loft Bindery" is the online shop created by Lauren, the girl (or lady, but it didn't sound good) that is staying with me and my brother these couple of weeks. We can talk with her pretty much about anything, and I like to have conversations with her about art, culture, literature or philosophy, because her point of view is always so interesting and so similar to mine. In fact, it was talking that I found out she likes crafts, like me, and she makes these beautiful journals out of old, forgotten books. She showed them to me and of course I had to take pictures of them, so I decided to take photographs to put on her Etsy shop. So here we are! And I think the pictures came out pretty well. There are also some that I didn't post here, so you can check those out on Etsy or on the shop's Facebook page, when she'll post them. She didn't expect me to take pictures of her too, but she was working on them and I really enjoyed watching her. I must say I am so happy she came here.

"The Red Loft Bindery" è il negozio online creato da Lauren, la ragazza che in queste settimane sta a casa nostra, per "badare" a me e mio fratello. Con lei parliamo più o meno di tutto, e a me piace avere conversazioni su arte, cultura, letteratura o filosofia, perché i suoi punti di vista sono interessanti e così simili ai miei. E' stato proprio chiacchierando che ho scoperto la sua passione per la lavorazione della carta, altro elemento in comune fra noi due, e che le piace creare diari prendendo le copertine di libri vecchi o dimenticati. Me li ha mostrati, quindi non potevo non fotografarli. Quindi eccoci qui! Le foto sono venute abbastanza bene, e le userà per il suo Etsy shop. Non le ho pubblicate tutte, per le altre ho lasciato a lei l'esclusiva quindi potete andarle a vedere su Etsy o sulla pagina Facebook del negozio, appena le pubblicherà. Non si aspettava che facessi foto anche a lei, ma ha cominciato a lavorare e dovevo provare, no? Devo dire che sono proprio felice che sia venuta.

Paths in the Woods

During fall break (yes, that was some time ago) I went to Wisconsin for two weeks with my host family. We didn't stay there in Wisconsin all the time, most days we were traveling around to a different town or hiking track. These are pictures I took in some of the different places we visited, although I mainly chose the ones I took walking in the woods. The trees were on the verge of changing their colors, so we were offered spectacular views wherever we went, everything was a mosaic of reds, oranges, yellows and greens, and in all this the birds were the main characters, singing from the tallest branches or watching the woods from up above in the sky. 
The first picture was taken on Dunn Lake, where my host parents have a cabin. I really liked those chairs. 
In the second picture are my host brother, from Colombia, and his cousin, who had come to visit us for a couple of days. We were in Duluth, Minnesota, getting ready to hike at the Hawk Ridge Bird Observary, while our host parents were going to do some bird watching. 


Durante la pausa autunnale (si, un bel po' di tempo fa) sono andata in Wisconsin per due settimane con la mia famiglia ospitante. Non siamo rimasti in Wisconsin tutto il tempo, la maggior parte dei giorni eravamo in giro, visitando un parco o una città diversi. Queste sono foto che ho scattato in alcuni di quei posti, anche se per questo post ho scelto quelle fatte camminando nei boschi o nelle riserve naturali. Gli alberi stavano cambiando colore, quindi ci sono state offerte delle viste magnifiche; era un continuo mosaico di rossi, arancioni, gialli e verdi, e in tutto questo gli uccelli erano i protagonisti, cantando dagli alberi più alti o guardando i boschi dal cielo. 

La prima foto l'ho scattata sul Dunn Lake, dove i miei "host parents" hanno una cabina, ovvero una casetta di legno nel bosco. Quelle sedie colorate hanno attirato la mia attenzione dal primo momento.

I due nella seconda foto sono il mio fratello adottivo, dalla Colombia, e sua cugina, che era venuta a stare con noi per qualche giorno. Eravamo a Duluth, Minnesota, e ci stavamo preparando per camminare nel Hawk Ridge Bird Observary, mentre i nostri host parents avrebbero fatto un po' di birdwatching.

We saw the dog while walking in Hawk Ridge, same place where we found these beautifully coloured trees. We met an old lady when we stopped to watch a stream in the wood and we walked with her for a while; she told us she ors there every day to appreciate the Lord's creation every day that she has, and she talked to us about the beauty and importance of nature and about the cruelty of human kind. It was an interesting chat, and when we reached the end of the road she almost left us in tears because she said it's rare to find young people interested in these things. I'm glad we met her, she gave us some interesting things to think about, and also gave us the names of some of the trees on the path.
The bird in the next picture was on Duluth's path too.

Abbiamo incontrato il cane durante la camminata a Hawk Ridge, stesso posto dove abbiamo visto quell'albero così magnificamente colorato. Abbiamo anche incontrato una signora anziana quando ci siamo fermati per guardare un torrente nel bosco, e abbiamo camminato con lei per un po'; ci ha detto di come lei va li ogni giorno per apprezzare le creazioni del Signore ogni momento che può, e ci ha anche parlato della bellezza e dell'importanza della natura e della crudeltà dell'uomo. E' stata una chiacchierata interessante, e quando l'abbiamo salutata si è quasi messa a piangere, perché ha detto che è difficile trovare dei giovani interessati a queste cose. Sono contenta di averla incontrata, ci ha dato delle cose a cui pensare, oltre ad averci aiutato con i nomi degli alberi.
Anche l'uccellino nella prossima foto era a Duluth.

These trees were on the path next to the Nemakagon River,  which we walked on several times. It was a short path, but very nice for an evening or afternoon relaxing walk. In the next picture are my two host parents, on the same path.


Questi alberi erano sul sentiero vicino al Nemakagon River, che abbiamo percorso più di una volta. Era un sentiero breve, ma piacevole per una camminata di  pomeriggio o di sera. Nella prossima foto sono i miei host parents, sullo stesso tracciato.

The picture above and the two below 
 were taken in the Dalles of The St. Croix River State Natural Area in Wisconsin, where we spent one day before saying goodbye to my brother's cousin. It was a nice, sunny day and it was the perfect time for a walk and a picnic outside. I think the pictures came out pretty well, the light was wonderful. 

La foto qui sopra e le due sotto sono state scattate al Dalles of The St. Croix River State Natural Area, Wisconsin, dove abbiamo passato una giornata prima di salutare la cugina di mio fratello. Era una piacevole giornata di sole, perfetta per una camminata e un picnic all'aperto. La luce era fantastica, penso che le foto siano venute abbastanza bene. 

The two water pictures were taken at the falls in the Lester Park in Duluth, Minnesota. I walked around for a while looking for a different picture, not like the classical ones of the falls, so I stepped on the rocks in the middle of the stream and put the camera on the ground, in order to use a longer exposition time. It worked! I experimented a little and tried with different shutter speeds, and the one down here is the one I preferred. 


Le due foto dell'acqua le ho scattate nel Lester Park di Duluth. Mi sono fatta qualche giro prima di saltare sulle rocce in mezzo al torrente per scattare la foto qui sotto. Ho poggiato la macchinetta per terra per poter rallentare la velocità di otturazione, e devo dire che ha funzionato bene. Ho fatto qualche prova con l'otturatore, e questa è la foto che mi piace di più.

Last but not least, the picture below was taken on Spooner Lake, Wisconsin. We went fishing with an old friend of my host dad, and we had a wonderful time chatting with him. He also taught me how to fish and how to flay the fish we just caught, which was happily eaten in the evening. 

Ultima ma non meno importante, la foto qui sotto è stata scattata sullo Spooner Lake, Wisconsin. Siamo andati a pesca con un vecchio amico del mio host dad, e abbiamo passato una bella giornata chiacchierando con lui. Mi ha anche insegnato come pescare e come pulire il pesce, che poi abbiamo cucinato e mangiato per cena.

Summer says Goodbye to Painted Hills


 No summer ever came back, and no two summers ever were alike. Times change, and people change; and if our hearts do not change as readily, so much the worse for us.

And yes, my unbeatable ability to procrastinate has had the better of me for these last weeks. I have had these pictures ready and I have wanted to post them for at least a month, but there was always something - trip, homework, weariness - that blocked me.
So here I am! Very late, but at least I'm here now.
The end of summer in Painted Hills was a mixture of greens and yellows that I would never have expected, and that I enjoyed thoroughly. During those days I tried to go out with my camera as much as I could, to go around the lake at dusk or to get to the Clubhouse with the last rays of sunshine of the day and try to capture the colours in the sky or on the flowers.
I have to say, I am satisfied with what came out of it.

Ebbene si, la mia infallibile capacità di procrastinare all'infinito ha avuto la meglio di me in queste ultime settimane. E' dal mese scorso che voglio pubblicare questo post e che ho le foto pronte, ma c'è sempre stato qualcosa - compiti, viaggio, stanchezza - che mi ha bloccata. Quindi eccomi qua! Con tanto ritardo, ma finalmente ci sono riuscita.
La fine dell'estate qui a Painted Hills è stata un trionfo di gialli e verdi che mai mi sarei aspettata, ma che ho apprezzato tantissimo. In quei giorni ho cercato il più possibile di uscire con la macchinetta per fare il giro del lago verso il tramonto, o per arrivare alla Clubhouse con le ultime luci della giornata e riuscire a catturare i colori del cielo o sui fiori. Devo dire che sono soddisfatta dei risultati.

This picture up here, with the butterflies, I took in September after coming back from a hike. I had just stopped on the front porch when I noticed that the sun was enlightening those flowers and that two or three butterflies were flying around there and stopping on the plant every minute or two. It was a perfect moment, I am really glad I noticed it. There are some other butterfly pictures from that day, but I'll publish them with another post. Anyway, as soon as I stopped taking pictures the sun, continuing its decent, made the perfect light disappear as fast as it had appeared.

La foto qui sopra, con le farfalle, l'ho scattata a Settembre dopo essere tornata da una camminata. Mi ero appena fermata sul portico di casa quando ho notato che i raggi del sole stavano illuminando quei fiori, e che c'erano due o tre farfalle che giravano li intorno e a tratti si posavano sulla pianta. Era un momento perfetto, sono contenta di averlo notato. Ho altre foto di quelle farfalle, le pubblicherò più avanti. Comunque, appena ho finito di scattare il sole, continuando la sua discesa, ha fatto sparire i raggi di luce velocemente.

I am particularly proud of this last picture. When I went out that day with the intention of capturing the lights at dusk, I would never have imagined the sky would be so perfect. 
Sono particolarmente orgogliosa di quest'ultima foto. Quando sono uscita quel giorno per fare foto al tramonto non mi sarei mai aspettata di avere un cielo così perfetto a mia disposizione.
