This week I went out with a friend, Valeria (which happens to be the girl in some of the pictures), with whom I walked around Villa Borghese and the centre of Rome while waiting for Romeo and Juliet, at the Globe Theatre, to begin. It was a goodbye day, since I'm going to America for the next six or ten months, so we spent the time talking and making plans for when I come back. Among other things, we decided to create a "Humans of Rome" page, like Humans of New York. We were quite exited about it, and we still are, I just can't wait to start!
These are the pictures I took while walking with her, and I am quite happy with them.

Questa settimana sono uscita con un'amica, Valeria (la ragazza in alcune delle foto), con cui ho fatto un giro per Villa Borghese e per il centro di Roma in attesa dello spettacolo di Romeo e Giulietta al Globe. Era il giorno per salutarsi, visto che io vado in America per i prossimi sei o dieci mesi, quindi abbiamo passato il tempo facendo piani per quando torno. Tra le altre cose, abbiamo deciso di creare una pagina "Humans of Rome", come Humans of New York. Siamo ancora molto entusiaste all'idea di cominciare!
Queste sono le foto che ho fatto mentre passeggiavamo, e evo dire che sono abbastanza soddisfatta.

I have to compliment myself with this man, because I admire his passion and will. The photos of him are among the ones I prefer. This one down here, in particular, looks as if it was painted on the left side. I have no idea how I did this, but I like it.

Devo assolutamente complimentarmi con questo signore, perché ammiro molto la sua determinazione e la sua passione. Le foto fatte a lui sono fra quelle che preferisco. Quella qui sotto, in particolare, sembra quasi dipinta nella parte sinistra. Non ho idea di come abbia fatto, ma mi piace molto.

This shot up here shows Tebaldo, orphan nephew brought up by the Capuleti Count in the hatred against the Montecchi family. I quite enjoyed this scene, even though I didn't really understand what he was doing. In my opinion, the choreographic effort was wonderful; in fact, this is one of the two photographs I prefer, mainly because of the colours (not due to the camera, but to the extraordinary costumes).
I will now proceed in describing the conditions in which I took these photographs, which will also explain why I am so proud of them. Obviously the use of flash was forbidden, so while I always set up the shooting settings with the manual mode, I am not that used to the manual focus, which was obligatory if I didn't want to light up the whole theatre (okay, maybe that's too much, but it was a lot of light). So, since I was really really far away from the stage and couldn't distinguish the actors' faces not even with my bare eyes, I decided to take about ten pictures per scene with different focus distances (if that's what they're called in English). I used a 70-300mm lens, and that's why I seem so near. Going home I found myself praying that at least two or three of them were good enough and… well, I am pretty satisfied.
For the rest, I leave you the judgment part.

In the next photographs I will (nearly) just describe what was happening.


La foto qui sopra mostra Tebaldo, orfano cresciuto dal Conte dei Capuleti nell'odio e nel rancore verso i Montecchi. Questa scena mi è piaciuta particolarmente, anche se non ho ben capito che cosa stesse facendo. Penso che l'effetto coreografico sia magnifico; in effetti, questa è una delle due foto che preferisco, soprattutto per i colori (ottenuti non grazie alla fotocamera, ma grazie ai bellissimi costumi).
Descriverò adesso le condizioni in cui ho scattato queste foto, cosa che spiegherà anche perché ne sono particolarmente orgogliosa. Ovviamente l'uso del flash era vietato, quindi mentre sono abituata a impostare manualmente la macchina, non lo sono per la messa a fuoco manuale, obbligatoria in quel caso per non illuminare a giorno il teatro (okay, magari ho esagerato, ma era parecchia luce). Quindi, considerando che ero molto lontana e non riuscivo a distinguere i volti degli attori neanche ad occhio nudo, ho deciso di scattare intorno alle dieci foto per ogni scena, ognuna con messa a fuoco differente. Ho usato un obbiettivo 70-300mm, quindi per questo sembro così vicina. Tornando a casa mi sono ritrovata a pregare perché ne fossero uscite almeno due decenti e.. beh, mi posso dire soddisfatta.
Per il resto, a voi i giudizi.
Nelle prossime foto mi limiterò (o quasi) a descrivere cosa stesse succedendo.

Romeo cries for his best friend's death. There was also a kiss, but I didn't even see it and was told afterwards about it. Pretty dramatic scene, however.

Romeo piange per la morte di Mercuzio, suo migliore amico. C'è stato anche un bacio in questa scena, ma non l'ho neanche visto e mi è stato raccontato dopo. Scena parecchio drammatica, comunque.

Romeo is exiled after having killed Tebaldo to revenge Mercuzio's death.

Romeo viene esiliato dopo aver ucciso Tebaldo per vendicare la morte di Mercuzio.

Frate Lorenzo gives Juliet a beverage to pretend her death.

Frate Lorenzo da a Giulietta una bevanda per simularne la morte. 

Romeo despairs for Juliet's (fake) death; she (in the second photo) drinks the beverage given by Frate Lorenzo. These two shot are not in chronological order.

Romeo piange la (finta) morte di Giulietta; lei (nella seconda foto) beve la bevanda datale da Frate Lorenzo. Queste due non sono in ordine cronologico.

A shot which shows a fantastic scenography, while Frate Lorenzo despairs for the misfortune of the two young. It must be said, that waist-up Christ was quite disquieting.

Una foto che mostra una scenografia fantastica, mentre Frate Lorenzo si dispera per la sorte toccata ai due giovani. Quel mezzo busto di Cristo era abbastanza inquietante, bisogna ammetterlo. 

Last three most dramatic scenes. Romeo finds Juliet's body and kills himself; afterwards she awakens finding him dead, also kills herself, and dies laying onto him. The one with only Juliet's body is the other picture I prefer.

Ultime tre scene più drammatiche. Romeo trova il corpo di Giulietta e si uccide; subito dopo lei si sveglia trovandolo morto, si uccide a sua volta e muore stendendosi su di lui. Quella con il solo corpo di Giulietta è la seconda foto che preferisco.

I advice everybody to buy the tickets. I found it a breathtaking experience, and compliment myself with cast, producers, set designers, costumists and music and text writers.

Consiglio a tutti di comprare i biglietti. L'ho trovata un'esperienza unica, e mi complimento con i cast, i produttori, gli scenografi, i costumisti e gli scrittori di musiche e testi. Torneranno a Roma a Marzo, e hanno fatto altre date in Italia. Il sito ufficiale è all'inizio del post.
