Every year, in Plami, on the 16 August, a
procession is held in honor of Saint Rocco, patron saint of the city. Lots of citizens are present only during the saint’s
exit from the church, and some others follow the procession through the city
streets. The most intrepid decide to
wear crowns or hoods of thorns, or to walk without shoes or socks, as an act of
submission. They are in fact called “the Thorned of Palmi” (translated from Italian).
Every year, a few days before the 15 August, the stalls are set up: cinese
things, Indian jewelry, African objects, pots, shoes and all kinds of odds and
ends are exposed in the main street. I have know this festivity since I was
little, but it’s the first year I try to photograph it. Obviously, the saint’s
exit was quite impossible to snap, being piazza San Rocco stuffed with people,
but that wasn’t my goal. The most amusing thing was looking at the people
staring at my 70-300 mm, but I assume I should get used to it.
